Uses of MEXDOXIM-50

MEXDOXIM-50 may be prescribed for selected bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Acute otitis media
  • Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
  • Selected skin and skin-structure infections
  • Acute bacterial sinusitis
  • Other susceptible bacterial infections when clinically appropriate

Your supplied product information also lists Typhoid Fever, Nosocomial Infections and Intra-Abdominal Infections. These claims should be retained on the final product page only if they are specifically supported by the approved prescribing information for the MEXDOXIM-50 formulation and applicable market. Current U.S. cefpodoxime labeling does not list these conditions among its established indications.

Key Benefits of MEXDOXIM-50

  • Contains Cefpodoxime 50 mg
  • Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Available as a convenient dry syrup
  • Provides an oral liquid option for patients who require suspension therapy
  • May be prescribed for selected susceptible bacterial infections
  • Convenient 30 mL packaging
  • Suitable for use when oral antibiotic therapy is clinically appropriate

Cefpodoxime should be used only for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to involve susceptible bacteria. Culture and susceptibility information can help guide antibiotic selection when available.

How MEXDOXIM-50 Works

Cefpodoxime belongs to the cephalosporin class of beta-lactam antibiotics.

First, cefpodoxime targets bacterial proteins involved in cell-wall synthesis. This interferes with the formation and maintenance of the bacterial cell wall.

As a result, susceptible bacteria lose the structural integrity needed for survival. Cefpodoxime can therefore help control infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

However, cefpodoxime does not treat viral infections such as the common cold or influenza.

Common Side Effects of MEXDOXIM-50

Some patients may experience:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Skin rash

Gastrointestinal reactions represent some of the commonly reported adverse effects with cefpodoxime. Seek medical attention if severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or other signs of a serious allergic reaction occur.

Important Safety Information

  • Use MEXDOXIM-50 only when prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional.
  • Do not use cefpodoxime for viral infections.
  • Patients with a previous serious reaction to cephalosporins or other beta-lactam antibiotics should inform their doctor before treatment.
  • Tell the healthcare professional about previous antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.
  • Patients with significant kidney impairment may require dosage adjustment. For severe renal impairment, official labeling recommends extending the dosing interval.
  • Complete the prescribed course unless the healthcare professional advises otherwise.
  • Do not share antibiotics with another person.
  • Seek medical advice if severe diarrhoea develops during or after treatment.
  • Use an appropriate measuring device for the dry-syrup suspension.
  • Keep the medicine out of reach of children.

Dosage & Administration

Use MEXDOXIM-50 exactly as directed by a physician.

The appropriate dose depends on:

  • Age
  • Body weight
  • Type of infection
  • Severity of infection
  • Kidney function
  • Clinical response
  • Other medicines being used

For pediatric patients, official cefpodoxime suspension labeling uses weight-based dosing, with the regimen varying according to the infection. For example, labeled pediatric regimens for acute otitis media, pharyngitis/tonsillitis and acute maxillary sinusitis use 10 mg/kg/day, divided into appropriate doses, with maximum daily limits.

Therefore, the 50 mg product strength and 30 mL bottle size should not be used to calculate the dose without checking the actual concentration after reconstitution.

For the dry syrup, follow the manufacturer’s exact reconstitution instructions. Add only the specified quantity of water, shake thoroughly and administer with a suitable measuring device.

Do not estimate the amount of water required for reconstitution.

Storage

  • Store the dry powder according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed.
  • After reconstitution, follow the specific product label for storage conditions and discard period.
  • Shake the suspension well before each use.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
