How MEXAFIX-O Works
Cefixime belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics. It interferes with bacterial cell-wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins. Consequently, susceptible bacteria cannot maintain their protective cell wall and may die.
Ofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class. It interferes with bacterial DNA replication by inhibiting bacterial enzymes involved in DNA synthesis. Therefore, it can stop the growth and survival of susceptible bacteria.
Together, the two components provide antibacterial activity through different mechanisms. However, the combination should only be used when a healthcare professional considers both components appropriate for the infection.

Important Safety Information

Ofloxacin can also affect the QT interval and may require particular caution in people with certain heart-rhythm problems, low potassium levels or medicines that prolong the QT interval.
Patients with kidney disease should inform their doctor because dosage adjustment may be necessary for cefixime and ofloxacin when renal function is reduced.
Also inform your healthcare professional about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines and supplements you take. This is particularly important if you use medicines that affect heart rhythm, anticoagulants or other medicines that may interact with either antibiotic.

Take MEXAFIX-O exactly as prescribed. Swallow the tablet with water and follow the schedule provided by your healthcare professional. Do not change the dose, skip doses or extend treatment on your own.
If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
Complete the prescribed treatment unless your healthcare professional specifically advises you to stop or change it.
