Description

MEXAFIX-DS contains Cefixime 100 mg, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic supplied as a Dry Syrup. Cefixime works against susceptible bacteria by interfering with bacterial cell-wall formation and may be prescribed for selected bacterial infections.

MEXAFIX-DS comes in a convenient 30 mL pack, providing an oral liquid dosage form for patients who require antibiotic therapy in suspension form. Cefixime oral suspension has established use in selected bacterial infections, including uncomplicated urinary tract infections, otitis media, pharyngitis and tonsillitis, and certain respiratory infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Uses of MEXAFIX-DS

MEXAFIX-DS may be prescribed for selected bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Otitis Media
  • Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis
  • Selected respiratory tract infections
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis caused by susceptible bacteria

Your product information also lists pneumonia, acute sinusitis and typhoid fever as benefits. However, these conditions should be presented as indications only when supported by the approved prescribing information for the specific MEXAFIX-DS formulation and market. Current U.S. cefixime labeling does not list pneumonia, acute sinusitis or typhoid fever among its labeled indications.

Key Benefits of MEXAFIX-DS

  • Contains Cefixime 100 mg
  • Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Available in a convenient dry syrup dosage form
  • Provides an oral liquid option for patients who require suspension therapy
  • May be prescribed for selected susceptible bacterial infections
  • Convenient 30 mL packaging
  • Suitable for use when oral antibiotic therapy is clinically appropriate

Cefixime should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. This helps reduce unnecessary antibiotic exposure and supports responsible antimicrobial use.

How MEXAFIX-DS Works

Cefixime belongs to the cephalosporin class of beta-lactam antibiotics.

First, cefixime binds to bacterial proteins involved in cell-wall synthesis. This interferes with the formation and maintenance of the bacterial cell wall.

As a result, susceptible bacteria lose the structural integrity they need to survive. Cefixime therefore helps control infections caused by bacteria that remain susceptible to the antibiotic.

However, cefixime does not treat viral infections such as the common cold or influenza.

Common Side Effects of MEXAFIX-DS

Some patients may experience:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Loose stools
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Indigestion
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Skin rash

Gastrointestinal effects are among the more commonly reported adverse reactions with cefixime. Seek medical attention if severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or other signs of a serious allergic reaction occur.

Important Safety Information

  • Use MEXAFIX-DS only when prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional.
  • Do not use cefixime for viral infections.
  • Patients with a known allergy to cefixime or other cephalosporin antibiotics should not use the medicine.
  • Tell the doctor about previous serious reactions to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
  • Patients with impaired kidney function may require dosage adjustment.
  • Tell the healthcare professional about any previous antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.
  • Seek medical attention if severe diarrhoea develops during or after treatment because antibiotic-associated Clostridioides difficile diarrhoea can occur.
  • Complete the prescribed course unless the healthcare professional advises otherwise.
  • Do not share antibiotics with another person.
  • Use an appropriate measuring device for the suspension.
  • Keep the medicine out of reach of children.

Dosage & Administration

Use MEXAFIX-DS exactly as directed by a physician.

The appropriate dose depends on factors such as:

  • Age
  • Body weight
  • Type of infection
  • Severity of infection
  • Kidney function
  • Other medicines being used

For pediatric patients aged six months and older, official cefixime labeling commonly uses 8 mg/kg/day, given once daily or in two divided doses, although the appropriate regimen depends on the clinical situation. The concentration of the suspension must be checked carefully when calculating the volume to administer.

For the dry syrup, follow the manufacturer’s exact reconstitution instructions. Add only the specified quantity of water, shake thoroughly and administer using a suitable measuring device.

Do not estimate the amount of water required for reconstitution.

Storage

  • Store the dry powder according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed.
  • After reconstitution, follow the specific product label for storage conditions and discard period.
  • Shake the suspension well before each use.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
