Description

MEXACLAVE-DS-457 contains Amoxycillin I.P. 400 mg and Potassium Clavulanate I.P. 57 mg per 5 mL of reconstituted suspension. It combines amoxicillin, a penicillin-class antibacterial, with clavulanate, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Together, they provide antibacterial activity against selected susceptible bacteria.

MEXACLAVE-DS-457 is supplied as a Dry Syrup in a 30 mL pack. This oral formulation can be prescribed for selected bacterial infections, including certain respiratory, ear and skin infections, depending on the suspected or confirmed causative organisms and clinical assessment.

Uses of MEXACLAVE-DS-457

MEXACLAVE-DS-457 may be prescribed for selected bacterial infections such as:

  • Lower respiratory tract infections, including certain bacterial pneumonias
  • Acute bacterial otitis media
  • Skin and skin-structure infections
  • Selected throat and upper respiratory bacterial infections, when clinically appropriate
  • Other susceptible bacterial infections when specifically prescribed

Amoxicillin/clavulanate oral suspension is indicated for susceptible bacterial infections involving the lower respiratory tract, middle ear and skin. Antibiotics should only be used when a bacterial infection is proven or strongly suspected.

Key Benefits of MEXACLAVE-DS-457

  • Combines Amoxycillin 400 mg with Potassium Clavulanate 57 mg per 5 mL
  • Provides the antibacterial activity of a penicillin-class antibiotic
  • Clavulanate helps inhibit certain beta-lactamase enzymes that can reduce amoxicillin activity
  • Suitable as an oral dry-syrup formulation
  • Convenient 30 mL pack
  • May be prescribed for selected respiratory, ear and skin bacterial infections
  • Useful when an oral liquid formulation is clinically appropriate

The 400 mg/57 mg formulation is a recognized amoxicillin/clavulanate oral suspension strength.

How MEXACLAVE-DS-457 Works

First, Amoxycillin acts against susceptible bacteria by interfering with bacterial cell-wall synthesis. This weakens the bacterial cell wall and can lead to bacterial cell death.

Meanwhile, Potassium Clavulanate inhibits certain beta-lactamase enzymes produced by some bacteria. These enzymes can break down beta-lactam antibiotics. Therefore, clavulanate can help protect amoxicillin from this mechanism of resistance.

As a result, the combination can provide antibacterial activity against selected organisms that produce susceptible beta-lactamases. However, it does not overcome every mechanism of antibiotic resistance, so treatment should follow appropriate clinical and microbiological assessment.

Common Side Effects of MEXACLAVE-DS-457

Some patients may experience:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Indigestion
  • Headache
  • Skin rash

Taking the medicine at the start of a meal can improve clavulanate absorption and may help with gastrointestinal tolerability.

Seek medical attention if severe or persistent diarrhoea, significant skin reactions, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or other signs of a serious allergic reaction occur.

Important Safety Information

  • Use MEXACLAVE-DS-457 only when prescribed for a suspected or confirmed bacterial infection.
  • Do not use it for common viral infections such as uncomplicated viral cold or flu.
  • Patients with a history of serious allergy to penicillins, cephalosporins or other beta-lactam antibiotics should inform their healthcare professional before use.
  • Tell the doctor about previous antibiotic-associated diarrhoea or significant gastrointestinal problems.
  • Patients with liver disease or a previous history of amoxicillin/clavulanate-associated liver problems require particular medical assessment.
  • Complete the prescribed antibiotic course unless the healthcare professional advises otherwise.
  • Do not share antibiotics with another person.
  • Contact a healthcare professional if severe or persistent diarrhoea develops during or after treatment.

Current prescribing information lists serious hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanate or other beta-lactam antibiotics among the contraindications. Antibiotic use should also remain limited to infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be bacterial to help reduce antimicrobial resistance.

Dosage & Administration

The dosage of MEXACLAVE-DS-457 should be determined by a qualified healthcare professional according to the patient’s age, body weight, infection, severity, kidney function and other clinical factors.

For pediatric patients, amoxicillin/clavulanate dosing is generally calculated according to the amoxicillin component and varies according to the infection and formulation. Therefore, the 30 mL bottle size should not be used to determine the dose.

For the 400 mg/57 mg formulation, follow the manufacturer’s exact reconstitution instructions. Add the specified quantity of water, shake thoroughly and administer using an appropriate measuring device.

Do not guess the amount of water required for a 30 mL pack. The manufacturer’s label should determine the exact reconstitution volume.

Storage

  • Before reconstitution, store the dry powder according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • After reconstitution, follow the manufacturer’s specified storage conditions.
  • The standard 400 mg/57 mg amoxicillin/clavulanate suspension labeling recommends refrigeration after reconstitution and disposal after the specified in-use period.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed.
  • Shake the suspension well before each use.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
