Description
METZALE combines Metronidazole 1% w/w, Sucralfate 7% w/w and Povidone Iodine 5% w/w in topical gel form. The formulation brings together antimicrobial and wound-care ingredients intended for selected wound and skin-care applications under appropriate medical supervision. Metronidazole has activity against susceptible anaerobic bacteria, povidone iodine provides broad antiseptic activity, while sucralfate may provide a protective topical layer in selected wound-care formulations.

Uses of METZALE
METZALE may be used under medical supervision as part of topical management for selected wounds or skin conditions where antimicrobial and protective wound-care therapy is considered appropriate.
Depending on the clinical situation, it may be considered for:
- Selected superficial wounds with risk of microbial contamination
- Wound-care situations where topical antimicrobial support is required
- Selected infected or malodorous wounds under professional supervision
- Local wound management where antiseptic and protective topical therapy is appropriate
- Supportive care for selected chronic or difficult-to-heal wounds as directed by a healthcare professional
Topical metronidazole has been investigated particularly for managing malodorous wounds, while povidone iodine provides broad antiseptic activity. Evidence for topical sucralfate varies according to the type of wound and clinical setting, so METZALE should not be considered a substitute for appropriate wound assessment and standard wound care.
Key Benefits of METZALE
- Antimicrobial Support: Metronidazole helps target susceptible anaerobic bacteria.
- Antiseptic Action: Povidone iodine provides broad-spectrum topical antiseptic activity.
- Wound-Care Support: Sucralfate is included for its protective topical properties in wound-care formulations.
- Combination Formulation: Brings together three ingredients with complementary topical roles.
- Topical Gel: Allows direct application to the affected area according to medical instructions.
- 15 GM Pack: Convenient topical formulation for appropriate wound-care use.
How METZALE Works
Each ingredient contributes through a different mechanism.
Metronidazole is an antimicrobial agent with activity against susceptible anaerobic microorganisms. After entering susceptible organisms, it undergoes chemical reduction and produces reactive intermediates that damage microbial DNA, interfering with microbial survival.
Povidone Iodine acts as a topical antiseptic. It releases iodine, which can react with cellular components of microorganisms and contributes to broad antimicrobial activity. Povidone iodine is used in several topical antiseptic and wound-care preparations.
Sucralfate is a mucosal-protective compound that can form a protective layer over tissue surfaces. Topical sucralfate has been studied in wound-care settings, although clinical results are not uniform across all wound types.
Together, these ingredients provide antimicrobial, antiseptic and protective properties intended for selected topical wound-care applications.
Common Side Effects of METZALE
Some people may experience local reactions after applying the gel. Possible effects include:
- Mild burning or stinging
- Redness
- Itching
- Skin irritation
- Dryness
- Local discomfort
- Temporary changes in skin sensation
Povidone iodine can cause irritation or allergic-type reactions in susceptible individuals. Topical metronidazole can also cause local irritation or burning.
Stop using the product and seek medical advice if you develop severe irritation, swelling, blistering, worsening pain or signs of an allergic reaction.
Important Safety Information
Use METZALE only according to the instructions of a qualified healthcare professional.
- METZALE is intended for topical external use only.
- Avoid contact with the eyes and other mucosal surfaces unless the product has specifically been prescribed for that site.
- Do not swallow the gel.
- Do not apply over large areas of the body unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional.
- Do not use on deep puncture wounds, serious burns, animal bites or extensive wounds without medical assessment.
- Povidone iodine should be used cautiously in individuals with known iodine sensitivity.
- Tell your doctor if you have thyroid disease, kidney disease or other conditions for which iodine exposure may be clinically relevant.
- Prolonged or extensive use of povidone iodine may increase systemic iodine exposure.
- Do not combine METZALE with other topical antiseptics or antimicrobial preparations unless specifically recommended.
- Clean and assess the wound appropriately before applying the product.
- Seek medical attention if the wound becomes increasingly painful, swollen, red or warm, develops pus, produces worsening odour or does not improve.
- Diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, deep wounds and chronic wounds require appropriate clinical assessment and should not be self-treated solely with a topical gel.
- Tell your healthcare professional about all medicines and topical products you are using.
- Discuss pregnancy and breastfeeding with your healthcare professional before use.
- Keep the product out of reach of children.
DailyMed labeling for povidone iodine advises external use and cautions against application to large areas or serious wounds without medical advice.
