Uses of MUPIZN

MUPIZN may be prescribed for the treatment of selected bacterial skin infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Depending on the diagnosis, mupirocin ointment may be considered for:

  • Impetigo
  • Localized bacterial skin infections
  • Selected infected superficial skin lesions
  • Certain minor skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria

Mupirocin is intended for bacterial infections and should not be used routinely for fungal infections, viral skin conditions or unexplained rashes.

The exact indication depends on the diagnosis, severity, affected area and clinical assessment. For detailed information, refer to the DailyMed prescribing information for Mupirocin Ointment.

Key Benefits of MUPIZN

  • Antibacterial Action: Mupirocin helps inhibit susceptible bacteria responsible for selected skin infections.
  • Targets Bacterial Growth: It interferes with bacterial protein synthesis, preventing normal bacterial growth.
  • Supports Treatment of Impetigo: Mupirocin is used topically for selected cases of impetigo.
  • Localized Topical Therapy: Delivers the antibacterial medicine directly to the affected skin.
  • Ointment Formulation: The ointment base supports application to affected skin areas.
  • 2.0% w/w Strength: Contains Mupirocin IP 2.0% w/w.
  • Convenient 5 GM Pack: Supplied in a practical topical ointment pack.

How MUPIZN Works

Mupirocin is a topical antibacterial agent with a distinctive mechanism of action.

It inhibits bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme required for bacterial protein synthesis. By interfering with this process, mupirocin prevents susceptible bacteria from producing essential proteins needed for their growth and survival.

Mupirocin has activity against several susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, which are among organisms associated with certain superficial bacterial skin infections.

Because mupirocin is an antibacterial medicine, appropriate diagnosis and responsible use are important to help reduce unnecessary antibiotic exposure and resistance.

Common Side Effects of MUPIZN

Most people tolerate topical mupirocin well. However, local reactions may occur at the application site.

Possible effects include:

  • Burning or stinging
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Dryness
  • Irritation
  • Rash
  • Local discomfort

Rarely, significant allergic reactions or severe irritation may occur.

Stop using the ointment and seek medical advice if you develop severe irritation, swelling, widespread rash or other symptoms suggesting an allergic reaction.

Important Safety Information

Use MUPIZN only according to the instructions of a healthcare professional.

  • MUPIZN is for external use only.
  • Do not swallow the ointment.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Do not apply inside the nose or other body cavities unless a healthcare professional specifically provides a formulation and instructions intended for that site.
  • Mupirocin should be used only for infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
  • Do not use it routinely for fungal, viral or non-infectious skin conditions.
  • Do not apply the ointment over large areas unless specifically prescribed.
  • Avoid unnecessary or prolonged use because inappropriate antibiotic use can contribute to antimicrobial resistance.
  • Tell your doctor if you have previously experienced an allergic reaction to mupirocin or topical antibiotics.
  • If significant irritation or sensitization develops, discontinue treatment and seek medical advice.
  • Inform your healthcare professional about other topical medicines being applied to the same area.
  • Do not mix MUPIZN with other creams or ointments on the same affected area unless advised by a healthcare professional.
  • Seek medical advice if the infection spreads, becomes more painful, develops significant swelling or does not improve with treatment.
  • Use in children should follow appropriate medical advice and the approved product information.
  • Discuss use during pregnancy or breastfeeding with your healthcare professional before treatment.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

For additional information about topical antibiotics and responsible antibiotic use, refer to the NHS guidance on antibiotics.

Dosage & Administration

Apply MUPIZN exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional.

For the referenced mupirocin 2% ointment formulation, a small amount is generally applied to the affected area three times daily for up to 10 days, depending on the infection and clinical response.

Before application, clean and gently dry the affected area. Apply a small amount of ointment as directed and spread it gently over the affected skin.

Wash your hands before and after application unless the hands themselves are being treated.

Do not apply more frequently or for longer than recommended. If there is no improvement after the prescribed course, consult your healthcare professional rather than continuing the antibiotic independently.

If you miss an application, apply it when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next application. Do not apply an excessive amount to compensate for a missed application.

Storage

  • Store MUPIZN in a cool, dry place.
  • Protect the ointment from excessive heat and direct sunlight.
  • Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use.
  • Store in the original packaging.
  • Do not freeze the ointment.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
