Description

MEXDOXIM-DS contains Cefpodoxime 100 mg, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic supplied as a Dry Syrup. Cefpodoxime works against susceptible bacteria by interfering with bacterial cell-wall formation.

MEXDOXIM-DS comes in a convenient 30 mL pack, providing an oral liquid dosage form for patients who require antibiotic therapy in suspension form. Cefpodoxime oral suspension has established use in selected bacterial infections, including acute bacterial sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and acute otitis media in appropriate patient populations.

Uses of MEXDOXIM-DS

MEXDOXIM-DS may be prescribed for selected bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

  • Acute bacterial sinusitis
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Acute otitis media
  • Other susceptible bacterial infections when clinically appropriate

Cefpodoxime labeling specifically includes acute maxillary sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia and acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults and adolescents, while pediatric labeling includes acute otitis media and acute maxillary sinusitis for specified age groups.

Key Benefits of MEXDOXIM-DS

  • Contains Cefpodoxime 100 mg
  • Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Available as a convenient dry syrup
  • Provides an oral liquid option for patients who require suspension therapy
  • May be prescribed for selected bacterial respiratory and ear infections
  • Convenient 30 mL packaging
  • Suitable for use when oral antibiotic therapy is clinically appropriate

Cefpodoxime should be used only when a bacterial infection is proven or strongly suspected to involve susceptible organisms. Responsible antibiotic use helps reduce the development of antimicrobial resistance.

How MEXDOXIM-DS Works

Cefpodoxime belongs to the cephalosporin class of beta-lactam antibiotics.

First, cefpodoxime targets bacterial proteins involved in cell-wall synthesis. This interferes with the formation and maintenance of the bacterial cell wall.

As a result, susceptible bacteria cannot maintain their normal structural integrity. The weakened bacterial cell may then undergo cell death.

Therefore, cefpodoxime can help control infections caused by susceptible bacteria. However, it does not treat viral infections such as the common cold or influenza.

Common Side Effects of MEXDOXIM-DS

Some patients may experience:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Skin rash

Gastrointestinal effects are among the commonly reported adverse reactions associated with cefpodoxime. Seek medical attention if severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or other signs of a serious allergic reaction occur.

Important Safety Information

  • Use MEXDOXIM-DS only when prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional.
  • Do not use cefpodoxime for viral infections.
  • Patients with a previous serious reaction to cephalosporins or other beta-lactam antibiotics should inform their doctor before treatment.
  • Tell the healthcare professional about any previous antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.
  • Patients with significant kidney impairment may require dosage adjustment. Official labeling recommends extending the dosing interval in severe renal impairment.
  • Complete the prescribed course unless the healthcare professional advises otherwise.
  • Do not share antibiotics with another person.
  • Seek medical advice if severe diarrhoea develops during or after treatment.
  • Use an appropriate measuring device for the suspension.
  • Keep the medicine out of reach of children.

Dosage & Administration

Use MEXDOXIM-DS exactly as directed by a physician.

The appropriate dose depends on:

  • Age
  • Body weight
  • Type of infection
  • Severity of infection
  • Kidney function
  • Clinical response
  • Other medicines being used

For pediatric patients aged 2 months through 12 years, official cefpodoxime suspension labeling provides weight-based regimens. For example, acute otitis media and acute maxillary sinusitis use 10 mg/kg/day, divided into appropriate doses, with specified maximum doses.

However, the exact volume of MEXDOXIM-DS to administer depends on the actual concentration after reconstitution. Therefore, the 30 mL bottle size should not be used to calculate the dose.

For the dry syrup, follow the manufacturer’s exact reconstitution instructions. Add only the specified quantity of water, shake thoroughly and administer using a suitable measuring device.

Do not estimate the amount of water required for reconstitution.

Storage

  • Store the dry powder according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed.
  • After reconstitution, follow the specific product label for storage conditions and discard period.
  • Shake the suspension well before each use.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
