Therapeutic Segment

Antibiotic | Cephalosporin + Fluoroquinolone | Infection Management | Typhoid and Gastrointestinal Infections | Urinary Tract Infections

Uses of Cefxn-O Tablets

Cefxn-O Tablets may be prescribed for infections caused by bacteria sensitive to cefixime and ofloxacin, such as:

  • Typhoid (enteric) fever
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Upper and lower respiratory tract infections
  • Bacterial gastroenteritis and other intestinal infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Other bacterial infections, as advised by a doctor

Cefxn-O Tablets are a prescription medicine. Antibiotics do not work against viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Take them only as advised by a qualified doctor.

Key Benefits of Cefxn-O Tablets

  • Dual Antibiotic Action: Combines a third-generation cephalosporin (Cefixime) with a fluoroquinolone (Ofloxacin).
  • Broad Coverage: The two antibiotics act on bacteria in different ways and together cover a wide range of infection-causing bacteria.
  • Convenient Combination: Two antibiotics in a single tablet.
  • Easy Dispensing: 10 × 10 blister pack for easy storage and dispensing.

How Cefxn-O Tablets Work

Cefixime stops bacteria from building their cell walls, which kills the bacteria. Ofloxacin blocks bacterial enzymes (DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV) that bacteria need to copy their DNA, which stops them from multiplying. Using both gives the medicine two different ways of acting against the infection.

Common Side Effects of Cefxn-O Tablets

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loose stools or diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain or indigestion
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Skin rash or itching

Stop the medicine and contact a doctor straight away if you notice tendon pain or swelling (especially in the heel), numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet, confusion, hallucinations, severe or bloody diarrhoea, swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing, severe skin reactions, fast or irregular heartbeat, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Important Safety Information

  • Take Cefxn-O Tablets only as prescribed. Complete the full course, even if you feel better, unless your doctor says otherwise.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to cefixime, ofloxacin, other cephalosporins or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin, as some people may also react to cephalosporins.
  • Fluoroquinolones such as ofloxacin can cause tendon inflammation or rupture. The risk is higher in older people and in those taking corticosteroids. Stop the medicine and rest the affected area if tendon pain occurs.
  • Use with caution, and only on medical advice, if you have epilepsy or other seizure disorders, myasthenia gravis, kidney disease, heart rhythm problems, diabetes or a history of bowel problems such as colitis.
  • Not recommended for children and adolescents or in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless a doctor decides the benefit outweighs the risk.
  • Take at least 2 hours apart from antacids, iron, zinc, calcium or magnesium supplements, as they reduce absorption.
  • Avoid excessive sun or UV exposure, as ofloxacin can make the skin more sensitive to light.
  • Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Tell your doctor about all your medicines, especially blood thinners such as warfarin, diabetes medicines, corticosteroids and medicines that affect heart rhythm.
  • Do not share this medicine or use leftover antibiotics. Misuse can lead to antibiotic resistance.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

For general information on using antibiotics safely, see the CDC guidance on antibiotic use.
